When Is Plaster Needed Before Painting?

Plaster or satin plaster is not mandatory on every refresh. If walls are sound, old paint adheres and the surface is fair, local putty + primer + two finish coats is often enough.

When is plaster / satin needed?

• Peeling or flaking old paint (loose film must be removed)
• Deep cracks and holes
• Uneven or highly absorbent plaster
• Visible unevenness in side light (common in living rooms)

Drying time — a common mistake

Thin satin-plaster products typically specify ~24 hours full drying; thicker coats, cold or humidity extend this. After drying, lightly sand and dust. Use a satin-plaster / absorbent-surface primer before finish coats. Painting wet plaster raises blistering and peeling risk.
